Wednesday–Open House

September 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Today, we continued with Week 2 of the opening routine.

I reviewed the Roots Binder with students, suggesting how they should use the binders to study for vocab.

A reminder:  Vocab Exercises 2-6 due tomorrow.  Sentences due Friday.

We spent the last half of the hour scoring (our own) diagnostic tests.  We got about half-way through, and we’ll finish tomorrow.  This should give the students a pretty clear idea of strengths and weaknesses in the area of “conventions” (grammar and usage).  We’ll use this to build on for the remainder of the year.

Don’t forget, parents: Open House tonight, starting at 6:45.  See you tonight!

We started with five minutes or so of review, including passing back Unit 8 quiz and their sentences.  I don’t usually cut it so close, but it gave students a rare opportunity in my classroom: reviewing for the quiz, in class, immediately before a quiz.  Hopefully, this will give students a good, strong last vocab quiz grade for the quarter.

DOL, quote and idiom followed when everyone was done taking the Vocab 9 quiz.

Due dates for Unit 10:

  • Exercises–Wed, Mar 28
  • Sentences–Fri, Mar 30
  • Quiz–Wed, April 4

Tomorrow, we will briefly discuss some film elements (shots, camera angles, lighting, sound, music, etc.) before beginning the film To Kill a Mockingbird.

A little catch-up after a couple of weird days.  We discussed the end of the novel heavily in 1st hour, and a little more in 2nd and 3rd.  In discussing some grammar issues (rise vs. raise), we drifted into some vocabulary issues (homonym vs. homophone; homonym is one of the Unit 9 vocabulary words.)

Vocab Unit 9 Quiz tomorrow.
